Re: Making the move from Boston portlawyer October 27, 2008 06:24 pm
I did it about 6 years ago. I left a large Boston firm and headed north to a NH firm. It was more than a 50% pay cut - closer to 60% or 65%. At large NH firms (local firms, not regional ones with NH offices) senior associates can make as much as $110K w/ bonus and junior partners/of counsel/non-equity partners make around $150 w/ bonus. Oftentimes junior equity partners can make less than senior associates or non-equity partners once they pay for benefits, etc. Bonuses aren't high and salary increases are not huge...usually around cost of living. Portsmouth is not cheap...other areas of NH are more affordable, but none are more beautiful or desirable. Hours vary (of course!), but 1800 is a norm with more actually expected and often a stated or unstated "nonbillable" goal of 400 or 500 per year (2100 total hours expected at my firm). Nixon Peabody has a 1850 goal but no bonus until at least 1900 or 1950; don't know about the other regional firms. More extracirricular is expected at many NH firms - adding to the work requirement without adding to allocations.

All of this said, I don't regret my decision. I do work less and have more freedom in what I do and when I do it. There are more opportunities for general practice and specializing (depending on what you want) in NH and I find the bar easier to work in - at least most of the practitioners.

I wish you the best of luck in your decision making! You can't beat Portsmouth and I couldn't advise anyone not to move there!
