I get the sense that the Portland firms are very much like any small regional center's firms. The lifestyle and culture do not measure up to NYC for stress and intensity, but it's not Mayberry USA, either. As I have said before on this board, the key problem with being an associate or partner at a Portland firm is comp. You'll walk down to the waterfront on Saturday when you take a break from your desk, to look at all those Boston lawyers doing things you can't afford to.
