I have done the smae thing. And yes, you do have a 'free' sixty day window. I was injured once, when I had no insurance, and it had been over 90 days since our insurance (through my wife's job) had expired. We looked through our files and couldn't find the COBRA waiver/information form. Turns out they neglected to provide her one, so we were able to elect coverage, and insurance paid for my surgery. Although it did take over two years to get all that sorted out:)
