I just got "laid off" from my legal job this year, I think because the firm I worked for (which shall remain nameless -- Kenyon & Kenyon at one Bdwy in NY) is not doing so well financial-wise. Why else would they be so bottom heavy on associates(can anyone say "greed"? and no one in their right mind wants to work there). I joined their ranks (long long long ago) when the place was still okay. My advice to anyone of any professional worth is, do NOT seek employment at Kenyon (unless you are male, white, misogynistic, racist especially regarding African Americans, homophobic, greedy, and most of all, incompetent; and you really, really, really have to get off seeing good people treated like garbage and seeing women demeaned while being laughed at -- no joke there, as a man I was disgusted to see this behavior).
Seriously though, I was happy when I got canned, but disconcerted about it for various personal reasons. No more though! Unemployment is awesome. I read books all day, lay out in the sun, watch TV, visit friends (you know, all the stuff you can never do when working for a NY law firm, espcially an ultra-greedy one like Kenyon where the money flows upwards but never ever to you, even though you are doing all the work -- and forget that flow in terms of bonus; you may get a bonus at Kenyon but only because you are getting paid lots less than at other places; it still ends up being less overall pay at Kenyon versus other places, but not less work).
I decided not to look for a job, because this is too too grand of a lifestyle (even though I'm broke too -- it beats bad legal employment). My advice is, try it out for size if you lose your job because it is total and absolute freedom and piece of mind! -- don't worry about it. When you get fired, you get to take yourself, your mind and all of your great legal expertise and leave the losers behind (which is a LOT of losers when it comes to Kenyon). Good riddance
