From an AUSA in a mid-sized, midwestern office:
Does the office look favorably on applicants from main justice? Yes.
Would a civil AUSA have the opportunity to transfer to civil? Yes - don't expect to move within 6 months but yes - immigration, bankruptcy and health care are three areas with a lot of civil/criminal overlap. I would take cases in those areas. Our office has a few AUSAs who handle both criminal and civil.
