Publishing in "crappy "journal versus not at all SubpartFU June 08, 2006 03:47 pm
i put 'crappy' in quotes because i personally don't believe that a journal that says "harvard" on the front is any better than one that says "cooley"-- the students at the former are worlds better, sure, but i don't see how that relates to what's in the pages of the journal.

that being said, i just finished my LLM and am looking to publish a very law-focused piece somewhere. given that the focus is law (and not "law and..." or whatever), i don't really think it's giong to be a "hot" topic...(it deals with the tax code and the APA mostly).

i personally don't give a sh!t about publishing in school A vs. school B (so long as the journal shows up on westlaw/lexis searches), but i'm wondering if it will look "bad" if i publish in a 4th tier journal (assuming I don't get bites from anywhere higher). given that the focus of my paper is on the law, i think it will be easier for a reader (if someone were ever to read it) to judge the piece on its merits, rather than just say "I have no idea what this anthropocriticalracefeminist paper is about, but it's in X journal, so it must be good (or in Y journal, and must be bad)."

also, if i publish it in a lower tier journal, but "market" the piece well, such taht it's cited in a major treatise or by a court, does that clean the stench of the "Cooley L. Rev" in the article's citation?

at this point i'm not interested in pursuing a teaching career, but i don't want to do anything that would hurt my chances if i wanted to go down that route.

thanks.
